Alphabitch Afterbirth was a zine I began in the early 90s. I made about 30 issues, and altho there were various editors besides myself, it was my project.
It began as a sort of feminist/riot grrl thing, and eventually just became weirder and weirder, featuring mostly prose and collages.
I would hand-sew the seams, and colour the covers with crayon.
It followed me all the places I lived, with issues being made in Athens GA, Olympia WA, and of course both Montpelier and Burlington Vermont.
“Every cool stoner had some of these,” one of my friends once told me, and not only were they smoker shack bathroom reads all throughout Montpelier, but I had contributed copies to Nuci’s Space in Athens, ABC No Rio in NYC, Bulldog News in Olympia, and Galerie Slaphanger in Holland.
Recently I lost the original templates for the zines. Whereas one can’t -exactly- consider it a theft, if you have a falling out with someone and they refuse to give back something that original and rare, it is a definitely disgusting gesture on that person’s part.
